MUSER procedural safeguards now in translation

The Department has translated the Maine Unified Special Education Regulations Procedural Safeguards into seven languages: Arabic, French, Khmer, Mandarin Chinese, Somali, Spanish and Vietnamese. The translations are available at www.maine.gov/doe/specialed/laws/proceduralsafeguards/.

Pesticide Board seeks public input on rulemaking initiatives

Before the Maine Board of Pesticides Control initiates formal rulemaking and the public hearing process on the rules listed below, it plans to hold two public information gathering workshops, where the public is invited to offer informal comment on the proposed changes. Several of the changes affect the use of pesticides at schools. The workshops will be held during the Board’s June 15 meeting in Augusta and its July 27 meeting in Presque Isle.

As part of my tour of schools to see how students are taking charge of their learning – putting the Maine Department of Education’s strategic plan into action – I visited three places Friday where all the students I met were eager to take control of their learning. Below you can read more about each.

In Auburn, I found kindergarteners learning letters and reading with iPads, enabling teachers to give more personal attention to students. At Gray-New Gloucester Middle School, I spoke with a panel of students who like the freedom they have to move at their own pace.

Commissioner joins Governor to present Young Writer of Year awards

AUGUSTA – Three high school students have been chosen as the winners of the Maine Community College System’s “A Journey into Writing” contest and named 2012 Governor’s Young Writers of the Year. They are: Amanda Dickey and Brianna Housman, both juniors at Searsport District High School, and Gaelyn Lindauer, a junior at Bonny Eagle High School in Standish. The contest is open to all high school juniors and home-schooled students of the same age.

Commissioner, students take field trip to Gulf of Maine Research Institute

PORTLAND – As part of Commissioner Stephen Bowen’s school tour, he visited Fort Fairfield Elementary School students during their trip to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland last week.

Each year, GMRI’s LabVenture! program presents fifth and sixth graders with a new marine biology-related question that scientists need help answering.

Registration for the National Guard and Reserve Institute on October 2-3 in Bangor is now open. The institute illustrates the Military Child Education Coalition’s mission to ensure quality educational opportunities for all military children affected by mobility, family separation and transition.
