Education commissioner continues listening tour

Bowen plans six more visits to cover Maine’s nine superintendent regions in first 100 days

AUGUSTA – Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen announced the dates for the remaining six stops of his statewide listening tour, which will take him to Maine’s nine superintendent regions in his first 100 days as education commissioner.

“The feedback I’m receiving on these visits has been invaluable as I start work on a strategic plan for education in Maine and determine how the Department of Education can be a better partner to educators,” Bowen said. “I look forward to more insightful comments from students, parents, teachers, administrators and others on the remaining stops of my listening tour.”

Bowen has already visited the Western Maine (Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties), Penquis (Penobscot and Piscataquis counties) and Hancock County regions. On those stops, he’s met with area superintendents, visited schools and hosted public forums.

The next listening tour dates will be:

April 6-7, Aroostook County: April 6, 11 a.m. – visit to Houlton Elementary School; 6-8 p.m. – evening forum at Caribou Middle School; April 7, 11 a.m. – visit to Maine School of Science and Mathematics, Limestone.

April 11, York County: 11:30 a.m. – visit to Massabesic Middle School, East Waterboro; 1:30 p.m. – visit to Sanford High School; 6-8 p.m. – evening forum at Mousam View Place, Sanford.

Additional tour dates are scheduled: April 25, Cumberland County; May 10, Kennebec Valley; May 17, Midcoast Region; May 24-25, Washington County.
