A senior set to graduate from Winslow High School on June 8 won’t have much time to bask in the completion of his high school career.
On June 30, Michael McCann will fly to Charleston, W. Va., to represent Maine at the 48th annual National Youth Science Camp, which will join top science students from across the United States for a three-week exploration of the sciences and the arts.
McCann has been selected as Maine’s delegate to the youth science camp, which takes place near the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank, W. Va.
McCann and scholars from other states will spend the three weeks hearing from top scientists and professionals from the corporate world, and conducting scientific inquiries of their own. Students will learn about topics including fractal geometry, the human genome project, climate change, the history of the universe, the fate of the planet’s rain forests and robotics.
Not only is McCann a top student at Winslow High School, he’s a three-season varsity athlete in cross country, basketball and tennis. He also participates in Winslow’s band, chorus and theater programs, and serves in the student government.
As a Winslow High School student, McCann was among a group of student volunteers who organized the expansion of a local soup kitchen.
McCann will attend Middlebury College in Vermont in the fall with plans to major in science.
The National Youth Science Camp, which delegates attend at no cost, is a program of the National Youth Science Foundation. Students who attend have to demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and leadership qualities.
