For the last 10 years the Maine Department of Education has worked with the U.S. Department of Education and the College Board to acquire grant money to cover the entire Advanced Placement exam fee for low-income students who are enrolled in an AP course. However, with major cuts at the federal level, the Department will no longer be able to fund the full cost of the 2013 AP exam fees.
The AP exam cost for 2013 will be $89. This price is reduced to $53 per exam for low-income students. This is a result of the school retaining an $8 rebate to help with administrative costs and the College Board providing a $28 fee reduction per exam for students who qualify for financial needs.
To determine whether a student qualifies as “low-income,” please see the 2013 Test Fee Eligibility Criteria.
The 2013 AP funds provided by the U.S. Department of Education to defray the costs of exams have been decreased. For this year, low-income students will now be required to pay $20 towards the cost of the AP exam. Schools will collect the $20 fee from the low-income students, and those fees will be paid to the College Board at the time of invoicing. The remaining $33 balance will still be contracted between the College Board and paid by the Maine Department of Education from federal funds received.
The ordering deadline for all Maine schools is April 12, 2013. Orders placed after this deadline will incur a $50 late order fee. Additional information is available on the College Board website at www.apcentral.collegeboard.com.
