Veterans Day will be observed this year on Monday, Nov. 12. We’re interested to know how schools in Maine mark the day and sharing their celebrations with other schools and educators.
Please share your school’s Veterans Day observation plans via the comments section below. Thanks for participating! (Please read our comments policy first.)

- United States Department of Veterans Affairs 2012 Teacher Guide and information on Take a Vet to School Day
- National History Education Clearinghouse Veterans Day resources
- Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center. The Center collects and makes available personal accounts of American war veterans in the “Experiencing War” section of its website. The Media Studies classes at Westbrook Middle School completed a keynote project to thank Veterans for the jobs they do. Thirty five students contributed to the project, each one responsible for a keynote. All those keynotes were transferred to one large keynote which can be viewed on our school website. It was a great lesson which lead to much discussion.
We are hosting our second annual Take a Vet to School Day at the Peninsula School, with 6 veterans this year. Students will have the opportunity to get to know two Maine veterans during two small group sessions on the afternoon of the 9th. Our 7th grade recently participated in the Cole Museum’s Interview a Veteran program and will be leaders for the middle school for this event.
