Notice to superintendents on 2014 Commissioner’s Conference

Dear Superintendents,

I wanted to personally invite you to save the date for our 103rd Annual Commissioner’s Conference for Superintendents, scheduled to run from noon on Monday, June 23 through noon on Wednesday, June 25 at Point Lookout in Northport (please note the Monday start).

In recent months, our Department has been working with the Maine School Superintendents Association to collaboratively develop a meaningful agenda that will best focus on the topics we know you are already so focused on. As a result, much of the conference will be devoted to the transition to a proficiency-based diploma and specifically, the role of superintendents in supporting that in relation to policy, practice and public will. Because we know you most value learning from your colleagues, we’ll be showcasing exemplars from the field throughout the conference program.

Please note business managers will be encouraged to attend the opening day of the conference, which will feature updates from each Department team and include interactive sessions on the compliance and finance issues you most frequently contact us for assistance about. Additionally, principals, who will be at Point Lookout for their own conference, will be included in our agenda Wednesday and that morning’s sessions will focus on topics of shared interest, including educator evaluations.

Please expect to receive a draft agenda and registration information from our Department in the coming weeks.

I hope you will join us June 23-25 in Northport.

Sincerely,

Jim Rier, Commissioner
Maine Department of Education
