Maine DOE proposes rules for suicide awareness and prevention

The enactment of PL 2013, Chapter 53, (LD 609), An Act To Increase Suicide Awareness and Prevention in Maine Public Schools, requires all Maine school personnel to be trained in suicide awareness and prevention. It further requires all school administrative units (SAU) to put supports in place to help prevent suicide.

Maine DOE is proposing a rule to provide guidance as to when the training requirements take effect, who they apply to and what qualifies as appropriate training. The proposed rule is available here.

Written comments on the proposed rule will be accepted through 5 p.m. on June 20. Hand delivery can be directed to the attention of Susan Berry, Maine Department of Education, Burton Cross Office Building, 111 Sewall Street, 5th Floor, Augusta; by mail to Susan Berry, Maine Department of Education, 23 State House Station, Augusta, Maine 04333-0023; or electronically to susan.berry@maine.gov.
