Department offers special services related guidance

The Maine DOE’s Office of Special Services is reminding all contracted service providers who provide services to children that they must undergo a Criminal History Record Check. This includes transportation providers such as cab drivers.

Additionally, when a child receiving special education services requires accommodation in the nature of behavioral support from a staff member, that staff member must be certified as an Educational Technician by the Maine DOE, and must be identified as such in Section 5 of the child’s Individual Education Program (IEP). This is so even if that staff member is also certified as a Behavioral Health Professional and MaineCare is billed for that person’s services.

For more information or technical assistance, please contact the Maine DOE’s Director of Special Services Janice Breton at or 624-6676.
