Maine Department of Labor offers technical assistance to support youth employment

The Maine Department of Labor (DOL) is offering increased assistance around youth employment.

The Department encourages students to access the youth work permit application here. The printable form allows a minor to start a work permit right online and drop off the completed form, which must include a parent’s signature, at the superintendent’s office. Blank forms are available at superintendent’s offices for pick up as well.

Almost all youth under the age of 16 are required to have an approved permit. Maine working youth under the age of 18 are subject to Child Labor protections. The student, their superintendent, and the Bureau of Labor Standards join together to ensure a positive and safe working experience.

Additionally, the Maine DOL is now offering direction and advice in person on youth employment guidelines to interested groups. For more information, please contact Maine DOL Customer Assistant Specialist Rachel Bowler at 623-7930 or Rachel.L.Bowler@maine.gov.
