Maine DOE helps expand internet access in rural Washington County

Maine DOE’s Learning Through Technology Team was in Washington County last week to lend its support for the “Check-out the Internet” event at Cherryfield Free Public Library.

The project is funded by a grant the Maine State Library received through a sub-grant from the New York Public Library as part of a Library Hotspot grant funded program. Students who participate in the Maine Learning Technology Initiative and who have received a learning device through their school but who do not have wireless access at home are eligible to check out a wireless hotspot from their community public library.

Upwards of 80 hotspots have been purchased to provide access for students across rural Washington County. The program is hoping to expand to other counties across Maine. The initiative is covering all costs related to the purchase of the WiFi devices and broadband access.
