Professional development for public preschool and visual arts teachers

The Maine Department of Education invites you to be part of a new professional development opportunity, “Fostering Artful Early Childhood Classrooms.” Early Childhood Specialist Sue Reed and Visual and Performing Arts Specialist Beth Lambert are looking for teachers who want to energize their teaching and learning through focusing on art in the public preschool classroom. Applicants must apply in teams of two: one public preschool teacher and one visual art teacher from the same district. The visual arts teacher must currently teach at the elementary level.

Professional development opportunity for education technicians working with students with challenging behaviors

Please note the original location of the Oct. 25 training has changed and will now be held in Brewer. As of Oct. 5, the Oct. 24 session remains open; all slots have been filled for Oct. 25.

The Maine DOE’s Special Services division will provide a free, professional development opportunity for education technicians working within special education. For convenience, the one-day training will occur in two separate locations in October.

Maine DOE updates teacher mentoring materials for 2016-17

The Maine DOE is announcing the official release of the newly revised teacher mentoring materials for the 2016-17 school year. The new materials have been reviewed and reworked, and replace older versions of print-based documents.

All mentoring materials are now available here on the Department’s Educator Effectiveness website including presentations, forms, training templates and video.

The new materials are comprehensive and make teacher mentoring a vital part of the overall effectiveness of a teacher. This support system is not only essential in growing and supporting our new teachers  but affords highly effective teachers an opportunity to expand their leadership.

2016 fall assessment workshops – MAARS & SAT reporting systems

Training for the Maine Assessment and Accountability Reporting System (MAARS – replacing iServices) and redesigned SAT are now scheduled and will be held in various locations (Portland, Waterville, Bangor, Lewiston, Presque Isle) during the week of October 31.

Maine DOE encourages arts educators to attend pre-conference during the Maine International Conference on the Arts

Maine DOE and the Maine Arts Commission invite visual and performing arts educators to attend a half-day workshop led by Cheryl Hulteen, author of YES YES GOOD: The heART of Teaching, during the Maine International Conference on the Arts. Participants of the workshop, Teaching Artful Practice/Practice Artful Teaching, will create personal artful pathways for students to express and explore creative voice through the arts.

English language teacher leaders attend ESL Summer Academy at UMaine

English learner educators from twenty-five school districts participated in the ESL Summer Academy at UMaine in Orono where participants engaged in activities to facilitate professional development planning based on the needs of their schools and districts. This valuable training supports educators as they become in-house facilitators, building capacity within districts to develop all teachers into teachers of English language to further support the needs of all students.

Maine STEM Summit and grant competition for educators

Maine DOE encourages educators to attend the upcoming Maine STEM Summit on Friday, Nov. 18 at Colby College in Waterville. This summit will provide an opportunity to foster discussion, engagement, and innovation across the education, workforce, and technology sectors of Maine. This year, K-12 educators are encouraged to apply for the first annual STEM Education Innovation Challenge Grant Competition to fund innovative projects in the classroom. Finalists of the challenge will present their pitches at the summit.
