Submit application for Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grants
The USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) is a grant to provide fruits and vegetables to students during the school day, aside from breakfast and lunch times. Maine schools have until Friday, March 30, to request applications to apply for the program. This program is only for grades PreK-8.

Every three years, voters are required to consider whether the school budget validation referendum process will continue (per Title 20-A, §1486 (1)). The last such vote took place for the FY 2010-11 budget year.

Maine schools may apply for school security funds
A grant from the State Homeland Security Grant Program is now open, and school districts and independent schools are eligible to apply. The grant application is due April 12, 2013, at 5 p.m. Funds are available for school emergency preparedness facility security projects.

Lewiston to launch College Scholars program this fall
Lewiston High School’s school board has recently approved a plan to expand and formalize the work of College for ME by implementing a College Scholars program, set to begin this fall in collaboration with the University of Southern Maine.

Highlighting targeted education support in Lewiston
Today I’ll be at Lewiston High School to talk about some of the targeted education support in Governor Paul R. LePage’s proposed two-year budget. These supports include funding to help districts implement the proficiency-based diploma and teacher evaluation systems; to expand access to college opportunities through five-year high school/associate’s degree programs, dual credit, and Adult Ed transition programs; and to make the kinds of supports and technical assistance that have been available only to Title I schools available to all schools.

Sequestration of federal funds anticipated March 1
The FY13 sequester is scheduled to go into effect March 1, 2013. Current calculations from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities project a 5.1 percent across-the-board cut to all nondefense discretionary programming, or roughly $2.5 billion from the U.S. Department of Education’s overall budget.

Understanding the GPA Teacher Retirement Initiative
Questions continue to arise in the field about the proposed retirement initiative in the Governor’s proposed biennial budget. As you make preliminary plans for your 2013-14 school budgets, it will be helpful to understand what is and is not included in this proposal. Of course, you must keep in mind, as always, that nothing is final until the Legislature takes a final vote on the budget – much could happen between now and then.

Comments sought on Maine’s annual IDEA Part C application
