Two Maine teachers are recipients of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. William O’Brien of Camden Hills Regional High School and Lisa McLellan of Windham High School will receive their awards at a Washington, D.C. event later this summer. These awardees teach 7th through 12th grade and were selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators following an initial selection process done at the state level.

Assistant Superintendent of RSU 3, Deb McIntyre, has been named Maine’s 2015 Curriculum Leader of the Year by the Maine Curriculum Leaders Association.
At the intersection of CTE and academics
Strengthening the connection between Career and Technical Education (CTE) and secondary academics was on the agenda recently when a group of Carpentry and Automotive instructors from around the state met with a group of high school English and mathematics teachers. The discussion was how CTE programs are in fact academically challenging and how the “hands-on” approach to instruction bridges the gap between theory and the real-world application of skills and knowledge.

Maine DOE honors finalists for excellence in mathematics and science teaching
Maine DOE recently honored two state finalists for the 2014 Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics and Science (PAEMST) with a dinner held at the Maple Hill Farm Inn in Hallowell. Shari Templeton, Maine DOE Science and Technology Specialist, and Michele Mailhot, Maine DOE Mathematics Specialist, planned the evening event honoring Lauree Gott, elementary science finalist (Veazie Community School) and Laura Stevens, Ph.D., elementary mathematics finalist (Dora L. Small School).

FAME announces Claim Your Future® available to all Maine middle schools
The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) recently announced their popular game, Claim Your Future® (formerly known as Get a Life), is now available to all Maine middle schools free of charge. Claim Your Future is a classroom and web-based resource that was created for middle school students to encourage them to explore education after high school, future careers and money management.
