Pilot training of a kindergarten entry assessment
Fifteen Maine kindergarten teachers spent three days last week learning how to pilot a Kindergarten Entry Assessment (KEA) with support from a grant to the Maine DOE. The KEA has been created with input from kindergarten teachers from the start and Maine teachers’ feedback on the benefits of KEA will guide its development.

Third annual National Anthem sing-a-long
In Maine, and across the nation, students are invited to sing in unity our National Anthem on September 11. This year marks the third annual simultaneous sing-a-long organized by the National Anthem Movement and concludes a year-long celebration of the 200th birthday of the Star-Spangled Banner.

A first of its kind in the nation in mathematics coaching
A collaborative effort of Maine DOE, MSAD 17, and the University of Maine at Farmington came to life in June at the first of its kind in the nation — math coaching project. UMF’s graduate program, the Maine Mathematics Coaching Project, brought together 15 teacher coaching candidates and their administrators to participate in the summer institute.

Deeper Learning manuscripts sought
Journal of Maine Education seeks manuscripts that discuss specific ways in which deeper learning is provided for students. Deeper learning is interacting with real world or simulated real world situations, often to solve relevant challenges. Students develop questions, connect with resources, research, challenge-solve, and communicate to an audience their findings and process.
Three Maine CTEs to offer plumbing programs
Career and Technical Education (CTE) centers in Farmington, Norway and Lewiston will begin offering new plumbing programs to students as a result of restitution funds from a settlement reached with the Maine Attorney General’s Office.

Maine Warden Service and Maine DOE working to assess applicant’s skills
The Maine DOE and the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife are working cooperatively to assess an applicant’s readiness, according to State learning standards, to work in the Maine Warden Service.

MooseCamp is a proficiency-themed conference on August 12 in Dexter, offering the opportunity to collaboratively problem-solve challenges faced when designing and implementing a proficiency-based system of learning. This EdCamp is open to everyone from administrators, teachers, ed techs, students, parents, school board members, and legislators. All participants who come to MooseCamp will receive a copy of the first book in the “Essentials for Rigor” series by the Marzano Center of Learning Sciences: “Creating and Using Learning Targets and Proficiency Scales.”
