The Blue Ribbon Commission to Reform Public Education Funding and Improve Student Performance is now underway, after enactment by the Legislature and signed into law by Governor Paul LePage. It is now recorded into statue as PUBLIC Law, Chapter 389, LD 1641.

Students honored for their creative accomplishments by Maine’s First Lady
The Hall of Flags was filled with music and a lot of excited school students who were recognized at a celebration of Excellence in Maine Visual and Performing Arts Education. This combined celebration by the Maine Department of Education and the Maine Arts Commission hosted nearly 60 students where Maine’s First Lady Ann LePage congratulated the students, “I am so impressed with your imagination and skills. Even the quotes with your pictures express your skills and we are so pleased to have your art work on display.”

Senator Collins visits with school children in Aroostook County
Senator Susan Collins journeyed back to her home turf of Aroostook County recently and visited the Aroostook County Action Program Early Care and Education Center at Gouldville in Presque Isle. While there, the Senator read a story to children in the Head Start/Child Development Services (CDS) Collaboration Classroom and played with toddlers in Early Head Start.

Science webinar from NOAA
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will broadcast a live educational webinar from Galveston, Texas as part of the 2016 Hurricane Awareness Tour on May 17 at 11 a.m. The 45-minute webinar is free and recommended for science students in grades 4-6.
Error in packaging creates confusion for PAAP returns
The Personalized Alternate Assessment Portfolio (PAAP) pick up by UPS on May 3 will occur regardless of a potentially late submission of the electronic Principal Certification of Proper Test Administration. All PAAPs must be ready for UPS pick up in school offices by 8 am Tuesday, May 3.

Maine’s first annual Farm to School Cook-off promotes locally grown goods
The Maine Department of Education launched its first Farm to School Cook-off this month with volunteer, food service staff teams representing five school districts and communities. The cook-off is part of the State’s child nutrition projects and follows legislation to support healthy meals in schools.

Inclusion Award Contest raises awareness; students recognized
How has the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) not yet been fully realized for people with developmental disabilities? If the ADA was fully implemented, how might the world look differently for people with developmental disabilities? These are questions students were asked to address in an essay, and there were over 80 entries in the Inclusion Awards Contest designed to increase awareness about recognizing everyone’s gifts.
