The Department is working with career and technical instructors to help them incorporate teaching of literacy skills to their students in a way that is aligned to the new, more rigorous and appropriate Common Core State Standards.

Four state finalists for the 2012 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching were recognized at a dinner held in their honor on Nov. 9.
The four Maine finalists are Lauree Gott, a science teacher at Veazie Community School; Sally Plourde, a second grade teacher at Prides Corner School in Westbrook; Elizabeth Vickery, a kindergarten teacher at Cushing Community School; and Karen Jagolinzer, a fifth grade teacher at Frank H. Harrison Middle School in Yarmouth.
Supporting efforts to improve student health and address issues such as obesity, the Maine Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance held its annual conference, “Let’s Move ME More,” this month at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.
On Monday I had the opportunity to attend an incredible event at the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor. Three middle school and three high school students read their winning essays based on interviews with veterans, arranged by the Museum and the Cole Family Foundation.
As with many of Gov. Paul LePage’s cabinet members, Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen will be participating Monday in an event to mark Veterans Day. He will speak briefly to recognize students who have written winning essays on the theme of “What Freedom Means to Me” at the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor.

As we observe Veterans Day this Monday, we’ll be honoring all the men and women who have served in the armed forces.
I’m looking forward to joining veterans and students at the Cole Land Transportation Museum to dedicate a new monument to veterans. Three middle and three high school students will read their essays on the topic “freedom isn’t free,” and we will be joined by each of the veterans that students interviewed for their submissions.
