The following is a news release from the Maine Charter School Commission.
AUGUSTA—The Maine Charter School Commission will hold public hearings on June 15 and 18 regarding three applications it received from groups seeking to open charter schools. Members of the public are invited to attend and encouraged to offer testimony in favor or opposition, as well as to submit written comments.
Nine groups have indicated they are interested in submitting applications by the June 29 deadline, though only five so far have done so. The other two applications – both for virtual schools – were tabled by the Commission.
The hearings are scheduled are as follows:
- Friday, June 15, 9 a.m.-noon in Room 103 of the Cross State Office Building, Augusta: Maine Academy of Natural Sciences. (9-10:30 a.m., interview applicant; 11 a.m.-noon, public comment)
- Monday, June 18, 9 a.m.-noon in the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee Room (Room 202), Cross State Office Building, Augusta: Baxter Academy of Technology and Science (9-10:30 a.m., interview applicant; 11 a.m.-noon, public comment)
- Monday, June 18, 1-4 p.m. in the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee Room (Room 202), Cross State Office Building, Augusta: Cornville Regional Charter School (1-2:30 a.m., interview applicant; 3-4 p.m., public comment)
Written comments may be submitted to the Maine Charter School Commission, 23 State House Station, Augusta, Maine or by email: mcsc@maine.gov. The public comment period ends after the fifth day following the public hearing date for each proposal.
