Flags to be flown half-staff Friday, August 31

The Governor’s Office has issued the following notice:

AUGUSTA – In accordance with a Presidential proclamation, the United States flag and the State of Maine flag shall be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Friday, August 31, 2012, to honor the passing of astronaut Neil Armstrong.

“Neil Armstrong was a hero and a symbol of American ingenuity and perseverance. He and everyone involved in the Apollo 11 mission showed that this great nation can accomplish any task it seeks when we work together, and forever solidified America’s place in history. We all mourn the loss of this American icon,” said Gov. LePage.

President Barack Obama signed on August 27, 2012, the proclamation as a mark of respect for the memory of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.
Armstrong passed away last week at the age of 82, following complications from cardiovascular procedures.
