Review districts’ responsibilities for homeless children with disabilities

This is a reminder that the responsibility for special education and related services for homeless children and youth with disabilities rests with the “school of origin.” The determinations of:

  1. which students meet the federal definition of “homeless children and youth”; and
  2. a student’s “school of origin”

are made by local homeless education liaisons who are designated in each district and the determinations are made in compliance with federal and state requirements.

In addition, the local homeless education liaisons ensure that any data required to be collected for homeless children and youth are collected at each school.

If you have any questions about education for homeless children, including the determinations listed above, please contact jacinda.goodwin@maine.gov. If you have any questions about special education or related services, please contact janice.breton@maine.gov.
