The University of Southern Maine Pioneers Program, a college learning community bringing together Maine’s best and brightest students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields, is accepting applications for the 2013-14 academic year. The program offers a highly competitive invitation with a merit-based award to attract top Maine high school students.
As a USM Pioneer, students receive:
- A generous four-year scholarship package
- A laptop computer
- Undergraduate research opportunities
- Paid internships with Maine companies
- Premium housing in a learning community environment
- Faculty mentors
- Networking opportunities with Maine businesses and government leaders
Pioneers are the next generation of leaders in the STEM fields. Qualified applicants will be high school students admitted into one of the following STEM majors: biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer science, electrical engineering, environmental science, general science, geosciences, industrial technology, mathematics, mechanical engineering, natural and applied sciences, and physics.
Pioneers are selected on the basis of their academic achievement, particularly in the areas of math and science. Generally those considered for the Pioneers program will have a math SAT score of 650 or higher and a B+ or better average grade in science and math coursework during high school.
By college graduation, Pioneers scholars will have completed 1,000 hours of high-impact, experiential learning opportunities designed to deepen their knowledge in STEM and to prepare them for careers.
In order to be considered for this award for next year, the Pioneers Supplemental Application must be received no later than Jan. 2, in addition to the USM Application for Undergraduate Admission. Students must also have their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) submitted no later than Feb. 15. Follow this link to information and applications.
Beginning in the 2013-14 school year, USM will no longer be able to offer scholarship packages covering full tuition and fees for all four years of a student’s undergraduate degree due to the high demand for placement in the program. All students accepted into the Pioneers program will qualify for USM merit-based scholarships and will receive award packages of up to $9,000 per year for four years, covering all or most of tuition and fees for 30 credit hours per year.
Please encourage students to take advantage of this opportunity. Interviews are being scheduled now.
