RSU 59 received a HealthierUS School Challenge Bronze Award at Madison Elementary School, with students and parents in attendance. HUSSC is a voluntary certification initiative established in 2004 to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity. Fewer than 4 percent of schools nationally have achieved the award.
Recognized for their work in improving the school nutrition and physical activity environment were food service staff Kelly Williams, Debra Hafford and Kathy Steuber; Parent Teachers and Friends member Angela Spack; and Food Service Administrative Assistant Doris Lindblom. Let’s Go staff members Heidi Kessler and Angela Norton were thanked for the support they provided to the school to complete the application. Presenting the awards were Gail Lombardi, Maine DOE Child Nutrition Services and Principal Scott Mitchell. Mitchell also read the note received from Michelle Obama.
