AUGUSTA – Governor Paul R. LePage and Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen will recognize the role STEM education plays in Maine’s economic future at a State House ceremony Wednesday celebrating our nationally-competitive robotics teams.
Representatives from businesses that need high-wage workers with skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics – known as STEM – including Pratt & Whitney, Jackson Labs and Mid-State Machine Products as well as the Manufacturers Association of Maine will join the Governor and Commissioner at the second-annual Governor’s Promising STEM Youth Awards.
Students on robotics teams at schools in Auburn, Brewer, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Mount Desert Island and Oakland and Maine’s two delegates to the 2013 National Youth Science Camp will be honored.
They’ll also show-off their robots in the Hall of Flags prior to the formal awards ceremony, in which the Governor, Commissioner and business leaders will speak.
As Maine works to develop a highly-skilled workforce and increase its competitiveness in a global economy, Governor LePage and Commissioner Bowen have increasingly promoted the importance of STEM.
The Maine Department of Education is working to expand access to and raise awareness and interest in STEM, in collaboration with PreK-12 schools, Career and Technology Education centers, higher education and industry.
Maine has also been a leader in the development of the Next Generation Science Standards, rigorous, internationally-benchmarked standards for education that will ensure science content and concepts, and the way they are delivered, prepares critically-thinking students for the colleges and careers of the 21st century.
