State Board of Education seeks student representative

The Maine State Board of Education is accepting applications for potential student members from schools in the Second Congressional District.

Applicants must be current sophomore in good academic standing and willing to serve for two years, starting this summer.

Application materials and further information about the State Board of Education are also available on the State Board of Education website at www.maine.gov/sbe/members/students.html, or by contacting Board Assistant Mary Becker at 207-624-6616 or mary.becker@maine.gov. Packets have also been mailed to the Second Congressional District high school principals and school counselors.

Please note that the deadline for receipt of applications and accompanying materials is 5 p.m. on Monday, March 10.

Since 2008, the State Board of Education has had two nonvoting student members who join the Board as high school juniors and serve for two years. Students are appointed by the Governor, confirmed by the Maine Senate, and, except for voting, have full privileges and responsibilities of Board membership. At all times, the State Board has one high school junior and one senior as members. One student comes from Maine’s First Congressional District while the other attends school in the Second Congressional District.

Current student members include Kristin Bishop, of Madison Area Memorial High School, and Alyssa Wardwell, of Massabesic High School, who was confirmed by the Maine Senate just this week.
