Save the date for ESL Summer Academy in June

The Maine DOE is encouraging educators of English learners to save the date for the 4th Annual ESL Summer Academy for teachers and administrators, scheduled to run from Tuesday, June 24 through Thursday, June 26 at the University of Maine in Orono.

In recent months, the Department has been working to collaboratively develop a meaningful academy that will best focus on the needs of English learners in the classroom. As a result, much of the academy will be devoted to serving English learners in the content classroom and specifically, the need to utilize data to inform instruction and develop lesson plans that address both the English Language Development standards and the content standards. Because we know that the majority of English learners in our state are taught in mainstream classrooms and that the education of English learners is the responsibility of all teachers, this academy is designed for ESL endorsed teachers as well as classroom and content teachers.

Please note that administrators and school teams are encouraged to attend the academy, which will feature interactive sessions on working with the academic language demands in content standards.

A draft agenda and registration information will be available from the Department in the coming weeks.
