Department encourages early summer food program planning

The Maine DOE is encouraging districts to begin planning now for their Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

Under Maine law, a school administrative unit (SAU) must offer meals through the SFSP if it has 50 percent or more of its students qualifying for free and reduced school meals and it operates a summer education or recreation program.

Districts may operate their own programs or collaborate with a nonprofit organization. An SAU may choose not to operate the SFSP by a vote of the school board following a public hearing with adequate notice if it is determined that such a program is financially or logistically impracticable.

For more information or technical assistance related to Summer Food Service Programs, please contact the Department’s Child Nutrition Services Specialist Gail Lombardi at or 624-6876.
