Maine DOE announces social studies DBQ workshops

The Maine DOE is inviting teachers of grades 6-12 to participate in its 2015 Social Studies Document-Based Question (DBQ) Workshop series scheduled for March 9 and May 6 in Brewer and March 10 and May 8 in Portland.

The DBQ workshops are designed to help teachers implement rigorous reading, writing and thinking activities with students of all skill levels and to increase student proficiency in generating evidence-based arguments.  Workshops will be facilitated by leaders of the national DBQ Project. The March workshop session will introduce the DBQ Project method and supports. Educators will select a suite of materials to best meet their students’ needs and will be asked to teach a DBQ lesson and collect student work prior to the May workshop. The May workshop session will provide an opportunity for teachers to analyze their students’ work and provide an opportunity to learn from their colleagues. Ongoing virtual support will be available between workshop sessions.

Each workshop site will accommodate 40 educators and the registration deadline is Feb. 27. A $50 registration fee includes lunch both days and a teacher resource binder, valued at $350. (a $350.00 value). Participants will earn 14 contact hours.
