The Maine DOE is encouraging teams of educators to attend its 2015 Summer Literacy Institute.
During the two-day sessions scheduled around the state in August, educators will explore methods for intentionally planning and delivering high quality English language arts/literacy instruction that supports achievement of proficiency.
Helping every student graduate prepared for entry into careers and higher education is the goal of proficiency-based system of education. To support successful transitions to proficiency-based systems, educators need deep knowledge of Maine’s learning standards and consistent understanding of rigorous outcomes.
Institute topics will include determining worthy texts, understanding how to group or “bundle” learning standards for developing units of study and purposeful assessments, creating meaningful text sets and methods of building knowledge across disciplines. Teams will have opportunities throughout the institute to reflect and plan for follow through in their schools and districts.
Maine DOE specialists Morgan Dunton and Lee Anne Larsen will facilitate the institute experiences.
The institute will be held at the following dates and locations:
- August 4 & 5: University of Maine, Presque Isle
- August 10 & 11: Jeff’s Catering, Brewer
- August 13 & 14: the Green Ladle, Lewiston
