Summer Institute educates over half of state’s school nurses
The Maine Department of Education hosted the 2016 School Nurse Summer Institute, Kaleidoscope of School Nursing Practice last week at Bates College in Lewiston. Major focuses this year included the federal and state laws and rules related to school nurse practice in Maine, increased knowledge and assessment skills, and more.

Notice of new rule: Instruction related to use of CPR and AEDs in public schools
The following rule, Chapter 41: Offering Instruction Related to Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and the Use of an Automated Defibrillator in Maine Public Schools, requires public schools to offer training to students on how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use automated external defibrillators.

Reminder: update school emergency operation plans
Summer provides an opportunity for school districts to complete an annual review and update of their Emergency Operations Plan, also known as a Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (Title 20-A §1001.16).

Two summer institutes to be held next week
The Maine Department of Education is hosting two summer institutes next week. Both the 2016 Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI) Summer Institute and the 2016 School Nurse Summer Institute will be held will be held July 26-28.

Drinking water protection seminar: save the date
The Water Resources Committee of the Maine Water Utilities Association is presenting the 10th Annual Drinking Water Protection Seminar Thursday, September 1 at the Governor Hill Mansion in Augusta. This year’s theme is “It’s Not Just Lead and Copper; It’s Customer Engagement.”

Positive school climate topic of upcoming conference
The Maine Event: National Conference on Positive School Climate at Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland will be held on June 23-24. This locally-planned national conference provides training and information about key components to many successful school initiatives around building and sustaining a positive school climate, reducing bullying, and developing strategies to increase student engagement.

MIYHS results at use in Maine schools
The 2015 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey (MIYHS) results show students are combating social norms, and that is why the results of this survey are valuable for schools and communities in developing policy, procedures, and programs.
School nurses recognized at the Blaine House
Maine 2016 School Nurse of the Year, along with some retiring school nurses, were honored last week for their years of not only service to Maine’s schools but the nurturing they have given to our children. “The nurses in this room total hundreds of years of nursing,” said Nancy Dube, the Maine Department of Education’s nurse consultant.
