Building safe and supportive school environments
Many people who grow up in Maine experience small town pride and friendly neighbors, which helps create a welcoming community in a school. School is considered a place that is safe because there are caring adults, supportive friends, and opportunity through extra-curricular activities to explore interests. No matter where a student lives though, today some students feel they are not safe at school. Some feel they do not all have supports, and some feel they are not given opportunities to shine through unique experiences.

Transportation departments invited to participate in national safety survey
While school buses remain incredibly safe, students are most vulnerable when they are outside the bus and within in the danger zone. This is why Maine school bus drivers have been invited to collect survey data about illegal passing to help improve safety countermeasures at the state or national level.

Transitions suicide prevention training Feb. 25
In an effort to continue our support of Maine’s youth, Maine DOE in collaboration with Suicide Prevention Training contractor NAMI Maine, will be offering the Transitions Lessons Teacher Training on February 25. In order to attend, participants must have previously completed Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Training.

Celebrate school counselors Feb. 1–5
The first week of February is National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). School counselors uniquely contribute to the educational programming in our schools through comprehensively designed behavior, academic, and college and career supports. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students succeed in school and plan for a career.

The Maine Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services Center for Disease Control and Prevention are proposing refinements to joint rule Chapters 126/261.
Notice of new rule: Chapter 41 instruction related to use of CPR and AEDs in public schools
The following rule, Chapter 41: Offering Instruction Related to Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and the Use of an Automated Defibrillator in Maine Public Schools, requires public schools to offer training to students on how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use automated external defibrillators.
2015 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey results available
Maine students reported fewer of them are engaged in sexual relations, one third of high school students report they have used vapor cigarettes, and 30-day alcohol use has decreased among high schoolers. These results and more can be found in the 2015 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey (MIYHS).
