Commissioner Stephen Bowen congratulates 14 teachers from across the state who have been nominated to become Maine’s 2014 Teacher of the Year. The program highlights great teachers and teaching. One nominee will be named the Teacher of the Year during a surprise event in September.

Seventh and eighth grade math teachers called to participate in UMaine study
UPDATE: This article was updated on March 27 to reflect the fact that eighth grade teachers can now undergo training too.
In a study offered by the University of Maine and ASSISTments, seventh and eighth grade math teachers will be paid to use a free online system to easily assign and monitor practice problems for homework, either from their textbooks or their own problems. Students will be able to do homework using their school-issued laptops.

Maine Center for Best Practice releases fourth case study and new resources
Regional Possibilities: A Case Study of the Western Maine Education Collaborative
The Center for Best Practice announces the release of its newest case study, which focuses on school transformation. Unlike the previous case studies, which highlighted individual school districts, the new case study focuses on a collective regional group: the Western Maine Educational Collaborative (WMEC).

Maine State Museum combines history, tech and theater for students

History, theater and technology recently converged in a lively program simultaneously involving eighth graders visiting the Maine State Museum’s Malaga Island, Fragmented Lives exhibit gallery and fourth graders at a remote site at Rockland’s South School.

Maine teacher shortage areas identified
The Maine Department of Education has been notified of the requirement to submit Maine teacher shortage areas by Dec. 14, 2012 for designation by the U.S. Department of Education for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years.
Clarification and Request for Proposals – 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants
The Maine Department of Education issued a Request for Proposals on Oct. 28, 2012, for 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants. The grant funds are for new and continuing grants to support community learning centers that provide students with academic enrichment opportunities along with activities designed to complement the students’ regular academic program.

Teachers, administrators and superintendents eager to incorporate response to intervention (RTI) and student-centered learning practices into their curricula flooded the Augusta Civic Center for breakout training sessions at the Experts Down the Hall conference on Monday. But it was seven RSU 2 students who stole the show during the student panel on learner-centered instruction.
This year’s Hall-Dale High School seniors will be the first graduating class to have spent all four secondary education years in a student-centered learning environment—and they raved about their experience.
