Schools that receive federal Title I funds, have poverty rates of at least 40 percent and have approved Title IA Schoolwide Plans are eligible to use their Title I funds – and funds from other sources – to develop “schoolwide programs.”

To ensure data quality Maine DOE has ended all open placement notifications (EF-S-01 forms) in the NEO data system as of June 30, 2016 and will continue to end notifications annually.
The Maine DOE acquired enough copies of the Maine Education and School Statutes 2016-2017 Edition law book from the publisher, Swan Island Press, to distribute one at no charge to each superintendent of schools in Maine.

English learner educators from twenty-five school districts participated in the ESL Summer Academy at UMaine in Orono where participants engaged in activities to facilitate professional development planning based on the needs of their schools and districts. This valuable training supports educators as they become in-house facilitators, building capacity within districts to develop all teachers into teachers of English language to further support the needs of all students.

Superintendents of a school administrative unit or the director of a publicly-supported secondary school or CTE region, with eligible staff who have attained National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification prior to July 1, 2016, must submit to the Maine DOE the list of those eligible to receive the salary supplement for the 2016-17 school year by October 15.

State law, 20-A MRSA Section 13013-A subsection 5 & 6; as amended by PL 2012 c. 702, established the National Board Certification Scholarship Fund to encourage teachers to apply to and enroll in the certification program offered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, or its successor organization.

All visual and performing arts teachers are invited to participate in a three-part, regional professional development series on assessment in the classroom.
This fall the Maine DOE and three campuses from the University of Maine system (University of Maine, University of Southern Maine and the University of Maine at Farmington) will begin providing professional development and technical assistance to school administrative units who commit to developing, implementing and evaluating a Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) program in their respective schools.
It is crucial to follow the rules of the road to keep Maine children safe on their journey to and from school. Maine traditionally has one of the best safety records in the nation, even as 80 percent of students ride the school bus.
