Earlier today, the Maine DOE unveiled its newly redesigned homepage. We liked our old homepage, but we are constantly looking to improve the experience people have when they interact with our Department and for so many, our website makes that important first impression.

Maine public school students in grades six through 12 are invited to participate in Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) video contest that awards over $2 million in technology and additional prizes to winning schools nationwide. At least five of the state finalist schools will be from Maine, and each state will have one winning school.

The Maine DOE subrecipient monitoring committee has released its first draft of fiscal guidance to help federal grant subgrantees interpret and apply federal and State regulations. The fiscal guidance can be found on the Maine DOE Fiscal Review and Compliance site.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency offers a three-hour, web-based training that provides leading practices and resources to assist elementary and secondary schools, institutions of higher education and houses of worship in developing emergency plans. The training, titled “Preparing for Mass-Casualty Incidents: A Guide for Schools, Higher Education and Houses of Worship,” will help audiences prepare for, respond to and recover from mass-casualty incidents.

Maine teachers, administrators and school technology experts are invited to attend the Association of Computer Technology Educators in Maine (ACTEM) conference to improve technology use in the classroom. This year’s theme, “‘X’ Marks the Spot – Destination Learning,” aims to investigate the evolving landscape of technology in schools.
On Oct. 16, 2012, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake hit the State of Maine, centered in northern York County, and was felt as far south as New Jersey. A year and a day later, on Oct. 17 at 10:17 a.m., schools, communities, families and businesses are invited to join the Great NorthEast ShakeOut, a multi-state earthquake drill spanning nine Northeast region states.

AUGUSTA – Maine’s First Family is inviting Mainers to visit the Blaine House once again this year in an effort to help fellow citizens who are less fortunate. In October, Governor Paul R. LePage and First Lady Ann M. LePage will open their doors for the annual Blaine House Food Drive. The Governor and First Lady started the food drive three years ago and have collected thousands of pounds of food for pantries and homeless shelters across Maine.
The Maine DOE has released data provided by Maine schools and other educational settings about the use of physical restraint and seclusion during the 2012-13 school year.
