Drinking water protection seminar: save the date

The Water Resources Committee of the Maine Water Utilities Association is presenting the 10th Annual Drinking Water Protection Seminar Thursday, September 1 at the Governor Hill Mansion in Augusta. This year’s theme is “It’s Not Just Lead and Copper; It’s Customer Engagement.”

Math teaching improves for students with disabilities

The Maine Department of Education provided three of its five days of intensive Foundations of Math training last month to some 30 educators in the Lewiston-Auburn and Turner areas. The rest of the training will take place in early August. The training is an integral piece of Maine DOE’s “Math4ME” special education initiative, designed to improve math achievement for Maine students with disabilities.

Secure your seat now for the 2016 Summer Literacy Institute

The Maine Department of Education’s literacy team is conducting one-day workshops in August to support Maine educators as they continue to develop proficiency systems in their schools. Sessions will focus on development of effective routines and strategies that have the greatest impact on student achievement.

Summer meals programs expand in Maine

Child nutrition programs at the Maine Department of Education have been working hard to close the “hunger gap” experienced over the summer months through the USDA’s Summer Food Rocks food distribution program. Several new summer programs kicked off in June, reaching a total of 400 meal sites across the state supervised by 120 sponsors.

Maine’s certification process: A precise, manual review

Maine’s certification statutes and rules, administered by the Department of Education’s certification team, apply to approximately 97,000 individuals in Maine who seek to work in Maine schools. The processing of applications is still a manual process, though the Department is working to transition to an electronic system within the next 18 months.

School superintendents honored at banquet in Bangor

Twenty-one Maine school superintendents and a representative to the state legislature were honored last evening at the 105th Annual Commissioner’s Conference, sponsored by the Maine Department of Education and Maine School Superintendents Association. The recognition banquet was held at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
