For many years, the Maine DOE has provided various College Board assessments to high school students. Maine’s required assessment system changed at the end of 2013-14 to no longer require the College Board assessments (former ReadiStep, PSAT/NMSQT, and SAT). To support schools through that transition, the Maine DOE provided the College Board assessments (the actual test and the cost of that test) on an optional basis during 2014-15. However, now for the 2015-16 school year, Maine DOE is not providing assessments beyond what is state-required, which is still being determined through the RFP process.

Welcome to the September issue of the Maine DOE Monthly, which provides a recap of some of the month’s news from the Department.
On Sept. 21, Acting Commissioner Tom Desjardin wrote to staff expressing his gratitude for all the well wishes he received following his accident Sept. 13.
“As you may already know, I managed to fall through the second floor of our barn and broke my back… the great news is I will likely only need to wear a big brace, sort of a cast, for about eight weeks to give my spine some time to heal. No surgery is needed. It makes my healing much easier knowing the work of DOE will continue as usual thanks to the great staff there…I can’t wait to get back to “the floor” and to working with you all again soon. See you all soon!”

The following priority notice was sent today to all Maine school districts.
In an effort to support school administrative units (SAUs) develop their PEPG systems, the Maine DOE is proud to offer grants of $4,600 for the purpose of PEPG professional development. To receive these targeted funds, SAUs must complete the PEPG Implementation Grant Application and respond to the Department’s Intent to Pilot survey (released in June) by Thursday, Oct. 15.
