USM Pioneers program pays full tuition, fees for STEM majors

The University of Southern Maine will pay full tuition and fees for current Maine high school seniors accepted into the recently established “USM Pioneers” STEM scholarship program.

Students accepted into the Pioneers program will begin study at USM in the fall of 2012 and receive:

  • a four-year scholarship package covering all tuition and fees for any approved science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) major;
  • a laptop computer;
  • undergraduate research opportunities;
  • paid internships with exciting organizations and companies (80 percent of USM STEM student interns accept their first professional career positions with the companies where they intern); and
  • premium housing in a learning community environment.

Eligible students are current Maine high school students admitted into one of the following STEM majors at USM: Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science, General Science, Geosciences, Industrial Technology, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Natural and Applied Sciences, or Physics.

Pioneers will be selected on the basis of their academic achievement, particularly in the areas of math and science.

In order to be considered for this award, applications for Fall 2012 admission to one of the majors listed above must be received no later than Feb. 1, 2012, along with the Pioneers application supplement, found on the USM scholarship web page at http://www.usm.maine.edu/admit/scholarships. Students must submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) no later than Feb. 15, 2012.
