From discussing proficiency-based diplomas and standards-based education systems to developing performance evaluation and professional growth systems for educators, the second session of the 125th Maine Legislature was eventful for the state’s public schools.
The Maine Department of Education has prepared a summary of major laws related to education enacted by the Second Regular Session of the 125th Maine Legislature. We hope this information proves helpful to you when planning for the 2012-13 school year.
The summary lists the provisions of each relevant bill, the effective date and action required by the bill, and the primary contact person in the Department and/or the State Board of Education.
An “Emergency” marking refers to legislation that can take effect immediately upon being signed by the Governor and receiving approval from two-thirds of the Maine Legislature. The general effective date for non-emergency laws passed in the Second Regular Session is August 30, 2012.
The summary can be found at http://www.maine.gov/doe/rule/index.html.
