Maine DOE regional workshops support math educators

The Maine DOE recently concluded a series of eight regional, full-day workshop sessions across the state intended to support instruction in mathematics and make connections to the State assessment.

More than 500 teachers attended the trainings, which were led by Maine DOE Mathematics Specialist Michele Mailhot and Mathematics Consultant Daniel Hupp.

The Department provided all participants with an eBook copy of Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All. Teachers learned about the eight mathematical teaching practices outlined in the book and made connections to those practices and the standards contained in the Maine Learning Results for mathematics.

In addition to using sample tasks and assessment items to illustrate the depth and breadth of knowledge and skills students are learning in mathematics, Department staff facilitated teacher discussions focused on the mathematical teaching practices outlined in the book while engaging in rich mathematical tasks appropriate to grade level. Participants had opportunity to reflect on their own instructional practices and learning opportunities for their students with colleagues.

Attending educators shared that the workshops provided them with a better understanding of changes in mathematical teaching practices and strategies for building student confidence and understanding of mathematics.
