Districts asked to designate assessment coordinator

The following Priority Notice was distributed on Wednesday, Sept. 7 to superintendents requesting they identify a district assessment coordinator to coordinator and ensure a successful administration of the 2016-17 State assessments.

Dear Superintendents,

As we begin another school year, your district will again identify individuals in key roles in the NEO Staff System. On behalf of the assessment team, I am asking you to consider carefully your choice of the individual designated as the District Assessment Coordinator (DAC). While the DAC may not be directly responsible for all the details associated with the various assessments, the Maine DOE will count on this individual to be familiar with all State assessments in order to help address any issues that may occur.

Maine DOE announces 2016-17 testing dates

The following Priority Notice was sent on Wednesday, June 15

To better assist the field with planning for the 2016-17 school year, the Maine Department of Education has released testing dates for the Maine Comprehensive Assessment System (MeCAS), including the required Maine Educational Assessments and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The testing dates are as follows:

  • MEA (Alternate) Science
    • 12/1/2016 – 4/30/2017
  • MEA – English Language Proficiency
    • 1/17/2017 – 3/3/2017
  • MEA (Alternate) English Language Proficiency
    • 1/17/2017 – 3/3/2017
  • NAEP (selected schools)
    • 1/30/2017 – 3/10/2017
  • MEA (Alternate) Math & ELA/Literacy
    • 3/6/2017 – 5/12/2017
  • MEA – Math & ELA/Literacy (grades 3-8)
    • 3/20/2017 – 4/14/2017
  • MEA – Science (high school)
    • 4/3/2017 – 4/14/2017

As a reminder, the Department recently announced anticipated release dates of the 2015-16 assessment results.

Estimated release dates of 2015-16 assessment data

The Maine Department of Education is negotiating a contract with vendor FocalPointK12 to deliver the 2015-16 assessment results via an online reporting system. The Maine Assessment and Accountability Reporting System (MAARS) is expected to be launched in the coming months and will provide both public and confidential access to data, replacing Measured Progress’ iServices portal.

To keep educators and the public informed, the Department has developed an expected timeline of release for the various assessments conducted during the 2015-16 school year. Although the timing for much of the data is later than desired, it is anticipated that the 2016-17 data will be released much earlier since Maine’s assessment and reporting systems will not undergo major changes in 2016-17.

MEA Alternate Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy (MSAA) Closes

The MSAA alternate assessment closes this Friday, May 13.

All “in progress” assessments must either be closed or submitted by 5:00 p.m.  No extensions are available.

Assessments for students that have received a Special Consideration should remain open.  All requests for additional Special Considerations must be received by the Department by the close of the assessment on Friday, May 13.

Error in packaging creates confusion for PAAP returns

The Personalized Alternate Assessment Portfolio (PAAP) pick up by UPS on May 3 will occur regardless of a potentially late submission of the electronic Principal Certification of Proper Test Administration.  All PAAPs must be ready for UPS pick up in school offices by 8 am Tuesday, May 3.
