AUGUSTA – Secretary of State Matt Dunlap applauded students from 24 Maine schools and two homeschools for their efforts in preparing entries for the Maine History Day competition, held April 4 at the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine and the University of Maine at Augusta.
The Legislature recently passed a resolution expressing support and appreciation for the Dirigo Boys and Girls State programs. This year’s Boys and Girls State programs will take place June 16-20.
Waynflete School students won the state competition for LifeSmarts, the ultimate consumer challenge.

Portland – Four Maine high schools came together to compete in LifeSmarts, the ultimate consumer challenge, at the Unum Corporate Campus in Portland on Friday, March 1. Hosted by the Maine Jump$tart Coalition, this competition-based educational program develops the consumer and marketplace skills of teens. Sanford High School in Sanford, Waynflete School in Portland, Woodland High School in Woodland, and United Technologies Center in Bangor all competed in the state competition.
The Annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recently selected Katherine Elliott, 18, of Scarborough and Marissa Bates, 10, of Westbrook as Maine’s top youth volunteers for 2013. As state honorees, each student will receive a $1,000 award, an engraved silver medallion, and a trip to Washington, D.C., May 4 to 7 for the program’s national recognition events. AUGUSTA—Senators Susan M. Collins and Angus King today announced the names of the two students who have been selected as delegates to the 51st Annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) that will be held March 9 to 16, 2013, in Washington, D.C.
The 2012-13 nomination period for 7-12 grade mathematics and science, including computer science, teachers for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teachingprogram is currently open.
