Student officers of the Maine FFA (formerly known as Future Farmers of America) participated in advanced leadership training in New York last month. They were joined by 35 student officers from FFA programs in other New England states and New York.

Downeast adventure for teachers in agriculture and science

The 2016 Maine Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC) Summer Teachers Institute will be held August 1-5 at the University of Maine in Machias. Educators will learn about locally grown foods and their impact on the Maine economy, applications in science, and different opportunities to integrate agriculture into the curriculum.

Child Nutrition Services hosts Back to Basics training next month

The Maine Department of Education will conduct its annual Back to Basics training on August 23. This two-day event will provide an orientation for new school nutrition directors  and  other program staff involved in the oversight and administration of school nutrition programs who are interested in a refresher.

Making a Difference through Schoolsite Health Promotion and Wellness Programs

The Maine Department of Education hosted the 2016 Maine School Wellness Summit, Inspiring the Future!, at Bates College on June 22 and 23. Just over 100 participants representing 43 school administrative units and seven school-supporting organizations joined the conference.

105th Commissioner’s Conference draws education leaders

The Maine Department of Education welcomed education leaders from across the state last week at the 105th Annual Commissioner’s Conference for Superintendents in Bangor. The topics of this year’s annual conference included the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), inequity that poverty creates in schools, school turnaround, and more.
