The Osher Scholarship, offered through the University of Maine System, has a new name and is available now. The scholarship is now called the Osher New Beginnings Scholarship. It is to encourage more Maine people of all ages to give college a try by allowing recipients to take one course, including books and required materials. Eligibility still includes those who are a first time student and has been expanded to include individuals who have 30 or fewer credit hours and have not attended in at least five years.

The first annual Thriving Maine Communities Conference, focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and resilience is being held for K-12 and post-secondary educators; medical and behavioral health care providers; law enforcement and juvenile justice workers; early care and education providers; child welfare agencies; clergy members; business leaders; policy-makers, legislators and community residents. September is attendance awareness month; a nationwide event recognizing the connection between school attendance and academic achievement. Count ME In, a Maine based non-profit organization, is promoting awareness that students who miss school frequently end up with gaps in their learning. Yet, chronic absence is a problem that can be solved when schools, families, and communities work together.
In August, the Maine DOE convened 33 educators to collect input on draft progressions for each of the five Guiding Principles. The feedback from the two regional sessions will inform the refinement of the Guiding Principles progressions.

During the 2012-13 academic year, the Maine DOE launched the Cross Discipline Literacy Network (CDLN), a professional learning network focused on helping PK-12 educators learn and apply literacy strategies to improve content instruction that promotes student proficiency. The network operates regionally across the state, utilizing both face-to-face networking experiences and digital webinar sessions.

As part of the implementation of Performance Evaluation and Professional Growth (PEPG) systems, Rule Chapter 180 and Maine Statute Title 20-A, Chapter 508 require that school administrative units (SAUs) begin piloting their PEPG systems during the 2015-16 school year.
