During the holiday season, I took time in my classroom to talk with my students about the things we have to be thankful for at school and in our lives. As I reflected on 2011, I realized I had much to be thankful for last year.

After 10 months of collecting and considering the public’s feedback and thinking seriously about our priorities, we’ve publicly released a strategic plan for education in Maine.

The Maine Department of Education has issued a request for proposals seeking bids to establish community learning centers that provide students academic support and enrichment opportunities outside the normal school day.

PORTLAND – Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen met with 10 Portland-area high school students on Dec. 14 to ask for their thoughts on school accountability and how to measure school and teacher effectiveness.
The 10 students represented Portland, Deering and Casco Bay high schools, along with Portland Arts and Technology High School and the Real School in Falmouth.
