AUGUSTA – Making close to 500 adult students hirable is the focus of $319,000 Integrated Education and Training Pilot Grant that will be evenly split between five adult education programs spanning from Androscoggin County to Hancock and Aroostook Counties.

Maine DOE provides $1M in grant funds to CTE schools
Maine DOE is pleased to announce 27 Career and Technical Education schools will receive their share of $1 million in grant funds in FY 2016. These funds may be used for upgrading equipment needed to complete the standards, certifying programs and teachers to be able to offer Industry Recognized Credentials (IRCs) and for student skill assessments related to the mandated standards. The grant fulfills the CTE standards requirement required in Title 20-A, section 8306-B.

Maine is one of 16 states to gain federal approval on Educator Equity Plan
The U. S. Department of Education has approved Maine’s Educator Equity Plan aimed at increasing access to excellent educators. Maine is one of only 16 states to receive approval of the required state Educator Equity Plan, filed with USDOE last month. To summarize, Maine will take steps to decrease the gaps in student access to experienced qualified teachers regardless of where students live, their income or their race.

Osher New Beginnings scholarship now open
The Osher Scholarship, offered through the University of Maine System, has a new name and is available now. The scholarship is now called the Osher New Beginnings Scholarship. It is to encourage more Maine people of all ages to give college a try by allowing recipients to take one course, including books and required materials. Eligibility still includes those who are a first time student and has been expanded to include individuals who have 30 or fewer credit hours and have not attended in at least five years.

Maine DOE partners with the UMF for mathematics coaching
Title I schools identified as Priority within Maine who also demonstrate challenges with mathematics performance, have the opportunity to utilize program improvement funds to support participation in the Maine Mathematics Coaching Project (MMCP) through the University of Maine Farmington’s Office of Graduate Studies.

Community school pilots for the 2016-17 school year
The Maine DOE has been authorized per Public Law 2015, Chapter 267 to designate three community schools established in accordance with 20-A MRSA Chapter 333 as part of a five-year pilot project beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

Salary supplement available to eligible educators and school staff

Maine educators encouraged to apply for certification scholarship program
Maine educators are encouraged to apply to and enroll in the certification program offered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, or its successor organization. This is courtesy of State law, 20-A MRSA Section 13013-A subsection 5 & 6; as amended by PL 2012 c. 702, which established the National Board Certification Scholarship Fund.
